Doughnut Day! Free, free, free doughnuts for all. Even the whole wheat one. But is it any good?

Today, and today only, participating Krispy Kreme stores will be giving customers a free doughnut to celebrate National Doughnut Day.

(National Doughnut Day, you say? Why, yes. You see, the Chicago Salvation Army started National Doughnut Day in 1938 to raise funds during the Great Depression and to honor the work of World War I Salvation Army volunteers who prepared doughnuts for thousands of soldiers. They can make anything a national day!)

Now, the question for us almost vegetarians who are trying to eat healthy foods is, should we try Krispy Kreme's new WHOLE WHEAT doughnut? And what about a nice drink from their new drink line to wash it down?

Would that be good? Would it? Hmm?

Whole Wheat Glazed Doughnuts at Krispy Kreme
Seems like an oxymoron (Oxymoron? Is that the right word?) to find a whole wheat doughnut at a Krispy Kreme, but there it is.

So that's pretty good. Whole wheat and all. And at 180 calories it is the lowest calorie item on the menu. Even lower than the doughnut holes. So that's good, too. Well, sure, more than half of those calories (100, to be precise) are from fat and, yes, this thing does have trans fats, and, yes ... erm ... who am I kidding? This is junk food no matter how you look at it. And, as one of my students once said, "You can taste the fat."

Well, if the doughnut is out, how about the new drinks?
Yes Virginia, those nice folks at Krispy Kreme Doughnuts are introducing a new line of frozen drinks. Called chillers, at their lowest, you're looking at 170 calories for the smallest Very Berry Chiller (12 ounces). But at their highest, you are looking at (sit down, trust me) 1050 calories each for the Mocha Dream, Lotta Latte, and Chocolate, Chocolate Chillers (20 ounces; and more than a third of those calories are from fat).

So is there any good news at Krispy Kreme at all? Well, the drinks are only available from June 3 - August 19. Thank heavens.
