What do Shania Twain and Carrie Underwood have in common?

One is blond, the other is brunette. One is American, one is Canadian. One has been singing for her supper since she was a teen, the other started singing more recently.

Give up?

I'll give you a hint. You are, after all, on a blog entitled Almost Vegetarian.

Carrie Underwood, of American Idol fame, was voted World’s Sexiest Vegetarian Woman in the World's Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity poll hosted by PETA. Shania Twain won this honor in 2001. In fact, she was the first star to do so.

Underwood, who also won in 2005, competed against vegetarian celebrities ranging from Alicia Silverstone and Alyssa Milano to Christie Brinkley, Jennie Garth, Natalie Portman, Pamela Anderson, Pink, Joss Stone, and Naomi Watts.

Sure, the contest may be a little silly, amounting to nothing more than a publicity ploy, but if you are on the PETA site, you might want to look around. Not only is there all sorts of information on going vegetarian, but there is a broad selection of recipes, such as this one (which is a particularly good way to start experimenting with tofu, if you're not familiar with it).
Food recipe: BBQ Tofu Salad
Serve this salad on a hoagie roll with lettuce, tomato, and onion for a quick-and-delicious meal.

1/2 lb. firm tofu (preferably herbed tofu)
1/2 cup green peppers, diced
1/2 cup Spanish onion, diced
2 Tbsp. cilantro, roughly chopped
1/2 tsp. cumin
1/2 cup whole-kernel corn
1/2 cup vegan mayonnaise
1/4 cup barbecue sauce

Wrap the tofu in clean towels and gently squeeze the water out. Dice into ½-inch cubes. Dice the green peppers and onions. Chop the cilantro into small pieces. Combine these ingredients in a large bowl, being careful not to break the tofu cubes.

Combine the cumin, corn, vegan mayonnaise, and barbecue sauce in a small bowl. Mix well.

Gently combine the tofu mixture with the dressing.
